research is trying to prolong the freezing process of the
umbilical cord blood samples from the current 10 -15 years to a
longer storage time. This will also prolong the efficiency of
the cord blood banking and the chance of using this source of
stem cells for members of the family who are in need.
Some other efforts of cord blood research are studying the
treatment of AIDS and cancer with the help of molecular
medicine. After special cord blood transplantations, the
patient's immune system should start fighting against the
disease. There are also efforts for treating many genetic
diseases with the help of cord blood gene therapy. Most of
these projects were being tested or will be tested on animals.
